Statutory Plant & Machinery Thorough Examinations & Inspections

FAQ’s

Do engineering plant, machinery and equipment inspections have to be the sole right of the insurance company’s?

NO, engineering plant, machinery and equipment inspections have to be carried out in line with Statutory Regulations and independent companies divorced from insurance like Safety Check Engineering can provide these services.

Do all my plant, machinery and equipment have to be insured?

That is a judgement that all owner/users of plant, machinery and equipment have to assess for themselves. You may find that certain policies which are mandatory like Buildings and Contents & Fleet will cover you for the majority if not all of your insurance needs. However if you wish to have extra insurance covers like Machinery Breakdown, All Risks, Sudden & Unforeseen Damage you will need to consult with your insurance company or broker.

Can I as an owner of plant, machinery or equipment place my own inspection requirements direct with an independent I engineering Inspection Company?

YES, you do not need to go through a third party (i.e. a Broker or Insurance Company).

What is the definition of a Competent Person?

Legislation itself does not prescribe what attributes a competent person must have, however, the health and safety executive (HSE) offers some guidance in various publications.

A Competent Person can be defined as “A person who has such appropriate practical and theoretical knowledge and experience of the equipment to be thoroughly examined or inspected as will enable them to detect defects or weaknesses and to assess their importance in relation to the safety and continued use of the equipment".

A competent person will normally be from an outside independent organisation that has sufficient training and experience in examination and inspection of equipment.
